As you may have observed from your gardening experiences plants can be fussy things. The right location, amount of sunlight and 101 other factors influence your plant's growing ability. One factor which is very beneficial in understanding before putting that new plant into the earth is soil pH.
What is Soil pH?

Let's get all scientific for a moment and learn what pH is. In chemistry pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline a solution is. Okay chemistry lesson over. Basically soil pH is a measure of how acidic or alkaline your soil is. Soil pH is measured on a scale of 1 to 14. If your soil has a pH value of less than 7 then you have acidic soil. On the other hand if your soil has a pH value of greater than 7 then you have alkaline soil. A pH value of 7 is neutral, meaning you have neither acidic or alkaline soil.
The Effect of Soil pH on Plants
Knowing the pH value of your soil before planting is very important as it has a direct influence on the health of the plant. Each plant has its own recommended soil pH value range. The reason for this is that soil pH effects the availability of nutrients within the soil and plants have different nutrient needs. For example the nutrient nitrogen, a very important plant nutrient, is readily available in soil when the pH value is above 5.5. Similarily the nutrient phosphorous is available when the pH value is between 6 and 7. If a plant is placed into the wrong kind of soil it will be lacking in nutrients that it needs which will promote disease. In general the best pH value range for soil is approximately 6 or 7 as this is the range in which most nutrients can be readily available.
Finding Out pH of Soil

Finding out the pH of soil is usually a trivial matter and the kits to do so should be available at most good garden centres. Usually a pH testing kit will include a small container / test tube, testing solution and a color chart. A sample of soil is taken from your garden, placed into the container / test tube and a few drops of testing solution are added. The container is then shaken and left for a certain period of time. The color of the sample in the container is then compared against the color chart to determine the pH value of the soil. Note that if you want to determine the soil pH of an large area it may be a good idea to take soil samples from many different locations, combine the samples and then perform the test on the combined sample.
A quick way to find out the pH of an area is to look to see if there are any house hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) already growing in the area. If so observe the color of its flowers. A soil pH of 6 or below will produce blue flowers while a soil pH of 6.8 or higher will produce pink flowers.
How to Make Soil More Alkaline (Increase pH)

If your soil is acidic or slightly acidic you can take steps to make it more alkaline to accommodate the plants you want to put there. You can make your soil more alkaline (increase its pH value) by adding a form of lime. Lime is a compound of calcium or calcium and magnesium. It is usually applied in the form of ground agricultural limestone, burnt lime or hydrated lime (slaked lime). The smaller the limestone particles then the quicker your soil will become more alkaline. For this reason hydrated lime will offer the quickest performance because it is slightly soluble in water so it can permeate the soil quicker and reduce acidity faster.
Increasing the pH of your soil is not an overnight process and it is best to allow 2-3 months to allow the lime to neutralize the acidity of the soil acidity.
How to Make Soil More Acidic (Decrease pH)

Some ornamental plants and fruit plants like blueberries require an acidic soil. To make your soil more acidic (decrease its pH value) you can use either aluminium sulphate or sulphur. Aluminium sulphate is the quickest acting as it will increase the acidity as soon as it disolves into the soil. The downsides are though that its effects can be short term and it is possible to over-apply it.
The more recommended but slower way to increase your soil pH is to use sulphur. Sulphur converts to sulphuric acid with the help of bacteria in the soil but this takes time depending on factors like the presence of bacteria, texture of the soil and moisture levels. This could take months if conditions are not ideal.

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds
2 Cups Pumpkin Seeds
1 Quart Water
2 Tablespoons salt

1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees
2. Bring water and salt to a boil. Add the seeds and boil for 8 to 10 minutes
3. Drain the seeds in a colander and spread them on a paper towel to dry.
4. Melt the butter. Put the dry seeds and butter in a large bowl and toss until the seeds are evenly coated.
5. Spread the seeds in a single layer on a cookie sheet.
6. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes until they reach a light, golden brown color. Stir seeds every 10 minutes during cooking.
7. Cool the seeds completely before eating.
You can remove the hulls from the seeds after roasting or eat the seeds hull and all. Keep roasted seeds in airtight containers.

Slugs are major pests of horticultural plants throughout the
world. They are destructive pests of home gardens,
landscapes, nurseries, greenhouses, and field crops.
Slugs also pose a health threat to humans, pets and wildlife
by serving as intermediate hosts for parasites such as
lungworm.
Slugs are inactive in cold weather and hibernate in the
soil.

Slugs destroy plants by killing seeds or seedlings, by

area. Slug feeding may also initiate mold growth or

Slugs feed on a variety of living plants chewing holes in
leaves, flowers, fruit and young bark. They are also
serious pests of ripening fruits, such as strawberries and
tomatoes, that are close to the ground. However, they will
also feed on foliage and fruit of some trees favoring
citrus. Some plants that are seriously damaged include
artichokes, asparagus, basil, beans, cabbage, dahlia,
delphinium, hosta, lettuce, marigolds, and many more plants
too numerous to list here. To determine if damage is caused
by a slug or other insect, look for a clear, silvery mucous
trail.
Under ideal conditions, chemical baits, containing
metaldehyde, can be somewhat effective because this aldehyde
paralyzes the slugs and they eventually die from
dehydration. However, under cool and wet conditions when
slugs are most active and troublesome, they can often
recover. And these chemicals are poisonous to cats, dogs,
birds and curious children.
Biological control provides an attractive alternative to
traditional control practices. Nematodes possess
exceptional potential as biocontrol agents for pest slugs.
In Europe, a product as been successfully developed from
Phasmarhabditis hermaphrodita, that is effective against a
wide variety of pest slug and snail species and it targets
only slugs and snails.
It would be a perfect solution for introduction into the US
but there are no published records of P. hermaphrodita
occurrence in the US. Thus, regulatory issues prohibit it's
introduction and marketing in the US.
Slugs do play a positive role in the environment. Because
slugs are also scavengers eating decaying vegetation, animal
feces, and carrion they help in breaking down decomposing
materials thus helping to release nutrients back into the
soil.
Slugs are night feeders so night traps and beer traps are
the best ways to catch and trap them. But there are many
other methods proven successful. One includes a very
common, but not well known, ingredient.

One of my favorite quotes is a quote of a quote in Transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau’s Walden, a writing he found on the bathtub of King Tchingthang, which Thoreau describes, " ‘Renew thyself completely each day; do it again, and again, and forever again.’ I can understand that. Morning brings back the heroic ages.” I agree, to wake up early, enjoy the dawn, and have a productive morning is some of my finest time. And there are little things that bring the beauty and productivity into fruition, little things that I don’t take lightly - like the encompassing power os something as simple as a candle.
Having the perfect scent can completely vitalize my day, and studies have proven this. It is now known that certain scents physiologically help create moods, citrus scents rejuvenate and create energy, lavender scents are calming, and so forth. And then there’s the primordial magic of the flickering flame, and poetry in certain scent combinations. So what do I renew myself with? Thai Market.

Pruning Weeping Cherry Trees and Other Grafted and Budded Plants

What do the terms grafting and budding mean?
Budding is a form of grafting. Grafting is the art of attaching a piece of one plant to another plant, creating a new plant. Grafting is usually done because the desired plant is extremely difficult if not impossible to propagate through other means. Dogwoods, for example, are easily grown from seed, however, it is next to impossible to grow a Pink Dogwood from seed. The seeds from a Pink Dogwood will produce seedlings that are likely to flower white.
The most common method for producing Pink Dogwood trees is to remove a single bud from a Pink Dogwood tree and slip it under the bark of a White Dogwood seedling. This process is known as budding, and the seedling is known as the rootstock. This is usually done during the late summer months when the bark of the White Dogwood seedling can be easily separated from the tree, and the seedling is about 1/4” in diameter.
A very small “T” shaped cut is made in the bark only, and the bud is slipped in the slot. The actual bud itself is allowed to poke out through the opening and then the wound is wrapped with a rubber band both above and below the bud. By the following spring the bud will have grafted itself to the seedling, at which time the seedling is cut off just above the Pink Dogwood bud, and the bud then grows into a Pink Dogwood tree.
Budding is usually done at ground level, and often times the rootstock will send up shoots from below the bud union. These shoots, often called suckers, should be removed as soon as they appear because they are from the rootstock and are not the same variety as the rest of the plant. Flowering Crabapples are also budded and are notorious for producing suckers. When removing these suckers don’t just clip them off at ground level with pruning shears, they will just grow back. Pull back the soil or mulch and remove them from the tree completely at the point where they emerge from the stem.
Most people clip them off a couple of inches from the ground, and then they grow back with multiple shoots. This drives me crazy! Get down as low as you can and remove them completely and you will keep them under control. On older trees that have been improperly pruned for years I take a digging spade and literally attack these suckers hacking them away from the stem. Sure this does a little damage to the stem of the tree, but when a plant is let go like that I figure it’s a do or die situation. The trees always survive and thrive.
Other plants are grafted up high to create a weeping effect. One of the most popular trees that is grafted up high is the top graft Weeping Cherry. In this case the seedling is allowed to grow to a height of 5’, then the weeping variety is grafted on to the rootstock at a height of about 5’. This creates an umbrella type effect. In this case the graft union is 5’ off the ground, therefore anything that grows from the stem below that graft union must be removed.
Many people don’t understand this and before they know it they have a branch 2” in diameter growing up through the weeping canopy of their tree. Before you know it there are several branches growing upright through the canopy and the effect of the plant is completely ruined.
At my website, http://gardening-articles.com I’ve got a couple of photos that show exactly what I'm talking about in this article. You can clearly see the weeping effect that the Weeping Cherry tree is supposed to have, but then up through the middle come these branches that are no more than just suckers from the stem, or the rootstock as it is known in the nursery industry.
Looking closely at the photos you can see that these suckers originate from below the graft union. This problem could have been prevented if someone had just picked off these buds when they first emerged on the stem of the tree. Then they would have never developed into branches.
This tree can still be saved, but there will be a large scar on the stem when the upright branches are pruned off. But under the canopy of the weeping tree these scars will never show.
Another interesting plant that is grafted is the Weeping Cotoneaster. In this case the seedling that is grown to serve as the rootstock is Paul’s Scarlet Hawthorn, and Cotoneaster Apiculata is grafted onto the Hawthorn rootstock at a height of 5’. Years ago a nurseryman found through experimentation that these two plants are actually compatible, and a beautiful and unique plant was created. I have one of these in my landscape and we love it.
Once again since the graft union is at 5’, any growth coming from the stem (rootstock) must be removed. In this case the growth coming from the rootstock will be Hawthorn and will look completely different from the Cotoneaster which is what the plant is supposed to be. The easiest way to keep up with this type of pruning is to keep an eye on your grafted plants when you’re in the yard. As soon as you see new growth coming from below the graft union, just pick it off with your fingernail.
If you catch these new buds when they first emerge, pruning them off is as easy as that. Walk around your yard and look for grafted or budded plants, and see if you can find any that have growth that doesn’t seem to match the rest of the plant. Look closely and you may find that the growth is coming from below a graft or bud union.

Pruning your roses is one of the most needed and the most annoyingly difficult tasks that goes with proper rose care. It takes a steady hand the proper procedure to ensure the best possible roses that you can get.
Pruning your roses is basically the act of getting rid of dead and damaged pieces, and teaching the new growth to grow in the correct outward facing direction. That just means that you are training them to grow facing the outside of the shrub or bush. This gives your roses the correct amount of circulating air to thrive in.
Here is a list of the proper techniques to guide through the pruning process.
* Soak your pruning shears in equal parts of water and bleach. This will help to protect your roses from diseases and insects.
* Pruning in the early spring, just after the snow melts is best. However you want to do it before any new growth appears. The best time would be when the buds are swelled, or red.
* Hand shears are the best tool for pruning the smaller branches. (about 4 1/2 inches thick) Loppers are best for the branches that are thicker or the thickness of a pencil. This will make it easier. You should use a heavy pair of rose gloves to avoid the thorns.
* You want to get rid of the winter protection that you set up like cones, burlap, and mounded soil.
* You want to get rid of the dead wood first. (That would be the black wood that is black inside as well as out).
* Next, you wan to get rid of the thinner wood, which is the stems that are thinner than a pencil.
* Cut all of the branches that cross or overlap one another because these are often diseased or will become so.
* Keep the remaining five healthy branches. These are often dark green. You will want to make your roses fluted or vases shaped, with an open center, and keep them from touching or overlapping each other.
* Cut your healthy canes to be about one to four feet long, or whatever size that you prefer.
* Cut you roses properly so that they stay healthy. Cut so that the bud is facing outside of the bush and at a 45 degree angle that slopes inward so that you can keep promoting the outward growth.
* You should use bypass pruners that work like scissors and not the anvil types because the anvils crush the stems and make the roses more available to diseases.

While the other systems are still in use, the majority of internationally established societies have adopted this one.
According to the American Rose Society, there are 3 main groupings of roses: the Species, Old Garden Roses, and Modern Roses.
Species Roses

Modern Roses

The Basics of Garden Fences

Fences are either open, to use as a trellis for roses or other plants, or they are closed to serve as a wind, sun or privacy screen.
The materials will depend largely upon the use to which the fence is to be put. The most popular, and probably the most attractive, fences are built of wood in various forms, but newer fences of asbestos-cement and corrugated sheet metal are colourful and stand up against rot better.
Because they are heavier, they are usually erected in a zigzag design, the better to stand up against prevailing winds.
The major problem in prolonging the life of a fence stems from rot at the ground line, for here it is susceptible to alternating wet and dry conditions.
Among the best woods for withstanding rot are California redwood and Southern cypress, white cedar and red cedar, chestnut, locust and arbor vitae. While painting the wood with preservatives often lengthens the life of your fence, this will do no good unless the preservatives penetrate.
That's why a post that has been machine-creosoted will resist rot, while a hand-creosoted post will not. However, if you use a good preservative on a clean, dry, unpainted wood, and give the wood two or three coats, you can do a good job.
Among the commercial wood preservatives you will find those of pentachlorophenol, copper napthenate (which has a green colour) and zinc napthenate, a clear solution.
In addition to the point where the post hits the ground, any place where two pieces are nailed together on a wooden fence is subject to rot. Therefore, it is wise to treat the wood where the members are joined before you put up the fence. This will preserve it much better than painting afterward.
Set your fence posts deep enough in the ground to resist the prevailing winds, at least 2 feet and even deeper. Set heavy posts in concrete. Tamp firmly in place so the fence will not wiggle. Hardware used should be galvanized.
Among the most popular types of fences are the traditional picket, the post-and-rail fence and the hurdle fence, but with increased stress on privacy screening, the louvered and lattice types are ever more popular.
The post-and-rail fence is made of posts spaced at 10 foot intervals with large slots cut in them. The 11-foot-long rails are tapered to flat ends, which are inserted in the posts. The hurdle fence has split rails built into a braced frame and nailed together, with the end pieces of each panel becoming the posts.
The picket fence, traditionally white, has posts spaced from 8 to 12 feet apart, rails 3x4 inches, and pickets 2 to 3 inches wide, pointed at the top.
The pickets should be 2 inches off the ground at the bottom and extend well above the top rail. The spindle fence is a kind of picket fence with round spindles that pass through holes in the rails.
There are many possible variations of board fences used for screening. A broad rail may be alternated with a narrow rail, or the boards may be applied vertically, like palings, with, perhaps, a staggering of the boards on either side of the rail. Boards may be slanted in a louver effect to give privacy while admitting air and sunlight.
A basket-weave fence can be constructed of thin, flexible boards and provides total screening and a handsome background for planting. It is somewhat difficult to build yourself, however.

The history of the gnome

Greeted by a garden gnome people often grimace in horror and mutter some displeasure while thinking how anyone could anyone have one of those in their back garden. But we’re also told ( from people in the know) that there are approaching four million of them in southern Germany and if you know where to look there’s quite a few in the US aswell.
Well it doesn’t surprise me about the Germans, since the first gnomes graced us with their appearance about 160 years ago. The first logged appearance was in the UK about 1840 in Lamport Hall. According to local myths gnomes are very lucky. It is documented in the 1870’s that manufacture began on a large scale. Apparantly they are meant to help around the house and garden, and in more isolated areas were meant to guard over produce and livestock.
Eventually, the European gnome creators became experts and masters of their work. During it’s most popular period a gnome factory in Griebel, Germany produced over 300 different characters.
In 1989, after the collapse of the iron curtain, savvy businessmen entered the market in the Czech Republic and started to produce cheap imitations of the original characters. At first they were stopped from entering Germany by a law customs officers confiscate those gnomes who were infringing copyright laws.
Unfortunately, it is all now all quite slack on the German border. The grandson of the founder, Reinhard Griebel, now has just one workshop and the gnome museum.
The first gnomes were always characterised as gardeners carrying out daily country tasks, but this grew to fishermen, sportsmen, musicians and many more. Then they started to model ones from people still living out of clay or stoneware.
In North Devon, in the southwest of England, there is a gnome reserve. There are over one thousand pixies and gnomes in the four acre reserve. Gnome fishing equipment and hats are given out so the gnomes feel at ease.
They are others that have a very different opinion about them. FreeTheGnomes.com provides Garden Gnome Liberation information and urges people to take action. Tips on Caring for and Feeding Garden Trees

When trees grow naturally in the forest, the leaves fall around them, decay and form a good soil. The leaves also preserve moisture in the soil.
On a lawn, however, the tree must compete with the grass for moisture and nutrients, and the leaves are raked up to prevent grass disorders, so that the successful gardener finds it wise to supply nutrients every two or three years.
Feeding should be done when the ground is workable, in the spring or in the fall.A difficult but worthwhile method of feeding is to strip the sod from an area all around the tree extending at least 2 to 3 feet beyond the outer branches, since the root system extends this far.
Apply stable or barnyard manure to this area, spreading it 3 inches thick and digging it in. Then firm the soil, rake it level and return the sod.
An easier method is to drill holes over the same area, 12 to 18 inches deep and spaced about 15 inches apart. Fill each hole with a commercial fertilizer (made up of bone meal, tankage, peat moss or humus) plus chemicals, in a formula containing 10% nitrogen, 6% phosphoric acid and 4% potash.
Because of the transpiration of a tree, especially in the hot days of summer, lawn and specimen trees must be watered at least every 10 days in summer to avoid trouble. Since the roots are deep, light watering won't do. The hose or sprinkler should be used for at least an hour.
If the soil is hard packed, loosen it with a fork. For a large tree, drive or bore a number of 1 1/2 inch holes 3 to 5 inches deep and 3 feet apart, below the outer branches. Use a canvas hose or cover the hose with a gunny sack and let the water run.
When planting new trees or small trees, if you put a few pieces of drain tile in the hole and put the hose in these, you can insure the water reaching the subsoil. Cover the drain-tile holes with stones to avoid evaporation.
Certain trees will not live long if a fill of soil is laid over their roots, or if a terrace of blacktop, stone, brick or concrete paving blocks is laid over their feeding roots. Large, valuable trees should be protected with drain tile so that they will get water and air. The bark should be protected from dirt from a fill directly against it. You can buy metal tree wells, 3 to 7 feet across and 1 to 3 feet high, or build a masonry wall.
The wall can be capped with a circle of bricks or a low wall to make an extra seat on the terrace. If you have some surface other than sod or earth around the tree, see that it does not extend as far as the tree's outer feeding roots, and leave a circle of natural soil around the trunk. This can be planted.
Care for your trees as injuries occur rather than wait to call in a tree surgeon and allow a weakened spot to remain untreated. Remove all dead, decayed, diseased or injured bark.
Do this by removing the entire limb, or, on a large limb or trunk, dig out the decayed matter, sterilizing and waterproofing the cut surfaces with creosote and liquid tar.
White lead or paint is not as good to use as it will not seal when used on damp surfaces. Fill deep wounds with concrete. Use pruning hooks carefully, avoiding bruises.

Organizing Your Garage

When the sun is baking your car and the interior is scalding hot, or when it's covered with eight inches of snow, don't you wish you had room in that garage?
It seems that everything that isn't used on a regular basis in the house generally makes it's way out to the garage, paint, oil, the kid's bikes, that box of stuff from college, tools, unfinished projects, etc. This problem is made even worse if you don't have a storage shed for gardening and lawn equipment.
Well, now is the time to make that room.
The first thing you'll want to do is make sure that any poisonous substances you may have in the garage is well out of the reach of children and properly sealed. Perhaps you'll want to put any pesticides, paint thinner, etc., in a locked cabinet.
If you have bikes they can be hung upside down from the ceiling. You can get bike hangers at the local hardware store, or at the bike shop.
Purchase good shelving for your garage. This can be open shelving, or shelving with doors. It can be floor to ceiling shelving or shelving put up on the wall with brackets. Any type of shelving will do as long as it's heavy duty. Give each family member a portion of that shelving for storage. Make sure that things of importance are stored up high so they are away from any possible damage from water.
This is a good time to go through all those cans of paint and stain and toss out the old. Look at your paint brushes - are they really any good anymore? If they are, keep them on the shelf with the paint. Put screws and nails and bolts, etc in cans or bottles on a shelf. Collect all your tools and take a look at them. What condition are they in? Every house needs a well stocked toolbox.
What about all those car care items? Wax, soap, oil, rags (the antifreeze should be in the locked cabinet). Choose a shelf for all these types of items. Also go through you gardening tools. If you don't have a shed you'll want to keep them in the garage where they're not left outside in the weather.
This may seem like a lot of work, but just remember the next time it's raining, or cold you won't have the discomfort of sprinting to the car carrying an umbrella. You can stay nice and dry and warm.

Mulch Your Spring Flower Bulbs in the Fall for a Beautiful Spring Display
Flower bulbs need a good, long, winter’s sleep. Like some people we know, if they wake up before they are fully rested they get kind of cranky, and then they don’t bloom well at all.
Actually what happens is during a mild winter, the soil stays too warm and the bulbs begin to come out of dormancy early. They start to grow, and once the tips emerge above the soil line, they are subject to freezing if the temperatures dip back down below freezing. And that’s usually what happens. After the bulbs have emerged, they freeze and then don’t bloom at all, or if they do it’s a very sad display.
Another reason this happens is because the bulbs are not planted deep enough. They may have been deep enough when you planted them, but as the soil goes through the freezing and thawing process, the bulbs can actually work their way up in the ground. One way to keep your flower bulbs sleeping longer, which will protect them from freezing, is to mulch the bed.
In the fall just apply a 3-4” layer of well composted mulch. This layer of mulch will do a couple of things. It will maintain a higher moisture content in the soil, which is good as long as the soil isn’t too soggy. Well composted mulch also adds valuable organic matter to the planting bed. Organic matter makes a great natural fertilizer.
A 3-4” layer of mulch also acts as an insulator. It will keep the soil from freezing for a while, which is good because you don’t want the bulbs going through a series of short cycles of freezing and thawing. Then when the temperatures drop below freezing and stay there for a while, the soil does eventually freeze. Then the mulch actually works in reverse and keeps the soil from thawing out too early. Keeping it in a frozen state is actually good because the bulbs remain dormant for a longer period of time.
When they finally do wake up it is spring time, and hopefully by the time they emerge from the ground the danger of a hard freeze is past and they will not be damaged. If you can keep them from freezing, they will flower beautifully. The extra organic matter will help to nourish the bulbs when they are done blooming, and the cycle starts all over again.
We also plant annual flowers in the same beds with our spring bulbs. By the time the danger of frost is past and it’s time to plant the annuals, the top of the bulbs have died back and are ready to be removed. The mulch that is added in the fall also helps to nourish the annual flowers, as well as improve the soil permanently. Any time you add well composted organic matter to your planting beds, you are bound to realize multiple benefits. The key words here are “well composted”. Fresh material is not good.

Mole Traps: Can you use them?

Mole control is one of the most complicated problems that
can face a gardening enthusiast.
It is not from lack of information. Plenty of information is
available. University research and white papers, government
brochures, and plenty of expert opinions.
It is not from a lack of products either. At any time there
are 10 or more different varieties of mole trap on sale,
plus various poisons and repellants.
The experts, university professors and even the government,
when they express an opinion, even come close to a
concensus. Mole traps are probably the most effective method
of mole control, if set correctly, checked on a regular
basis etc.
Most reports however take a very simplistic view:-
A single plot of land
No regard to whether neighbouring plots are residential, farmland or wooded.
No recommendations on how to co-ordinate efforts with
neighbours.
If one neighbour has a huge infestation of moles, but
refuses to take action, can they be force to do so? If you
used fumigation in such a case, could they hold you liable
for killing their moles?
Rules apply to specific locality
There are states in the US where the use of mole traps are
restricted. There are areas of Canada where both the Eastern
Mole and the Townsend mole are a protected species. The
bordering states in the US have no restrictions, yet species
conservation is meant to be a global concern.
Lethal methods of mole control can only be used in Germany where the moles are a confirmed hazard.
The use of traps in many US States currently falls under
hunting regulations which can require a license, and
specific measures to be taken. This is often not enforced.

Making Your Garden an Outdoor Living Room

Today, when building costs make large houses prohibitive, one way to extend your house is to use your outdoor space to full advantage. And many contemporary houses make many a room look larger by visually extending it into the lawn or garden.
Tricks such as glass walls, using the same wall material inside as for a continuing wall on the terrace and using the same material for the ceiling inside as on the extended terrace eaves, help to do this.
Your living room or dining room and even your bedroom or your children's bedrooms can flow right outdoors on to "floating" decks of wood, bricked terraces or lattice-roofed loggias.
However you do it, with the aid of vine, fences, shrubbery, shade trees and flowers you can make your terrace a delightful place for entertaining, sun-bathing and relaxing.
With a barbecue another dimension is added, for with your own fireplace or barbecue any terrace, lawn or garden spot can offer the blithe enchantments of dining under sun and stars.
In planning your terrace, consider installing an electric outlet for lighting, portable radio, electric spit for your barbecue, etc.
Use vines for a lattice roof (grape vines, for instance, leaf out late when shade is wanted and drop their leaves early at the beginning of cool weather, giving delicious fruit as bonus). Choose a rapid-growing vine like grape, hyacinth or the gourd vine.
Relate your terrace to the rest of your grounds with flowers and vines grown in pots, baskets and tubs. If the wall of the house next to your terrace seems bare or the profile of your cement or asphalt paving seems too sharp in contrast against the grass, soften the line with pots of plants.
Have dwarf trees on your terrace and blossoming shrubs in the terrace-retaining walls. Create interest with changes of level; build flower beds around trees, steps and walls.
For a terrace where everybody in the family assembles, have play space for young children, a sand box which can later be filled with plants, or a little square pool for sailing small boats (this can create a sense of luxury long after the children are grown up).
You need not rely on trees alone for shade. Construct a self-bracing terrace roof in an egg-crate design, using the side of your house and wood, masonry or metal pillars. Corrugated plastic and reinforced glass is in frequent use nowadays because they are watertight, yet let the sunlight through.
Coming into more and more architectural use — particularly in hot climates—is the "parasol" roof, extending from the walls of the house some 4 feet and even more to give pleasant shade to the surrounding area.
Since glare reflected on bare grounds is a source of heat, a carpet of shaded grass under the parasol roof helps to keep the house cool.
Often an outdoor living space gets twice the use if it is made more accessible. A window in a living room can be converted to a French door, making it more natural to step right out on the terrace instead of walking around the house to reach it.
A terrace that is an extension of a narrow porch—a paved area adjoining the porch—will make the porch that much more liveable. A flagstone path—or any other path— leading to a terrace away from the house will increase the usefulness of the terrace.
Some kind of hard flooring is of prime importance, whether it is of brick, crushed rock, cement, wood block, or flagstone, for it makes it easier to move the furniture around and eliminates worries over tramped-on turf. In fact, it is a good idea to have a terrace in a spot where you are having trouble with the lawn.
Outdoor living space is successful, too, when it is sheltered—away from street noises and traffic, from the neighbours, from the wind. An unused corner of the house or the garage, with the aid of fences and walls, can turn into a sun trap that will stretch out the season for outdoor living both in spring and fall.
A louvered board fence, a basket-weave fence, asbestos laid in cement to form a modern wall, or the traditional brick wall, all are pleasant backgrounds for planting and good screens against wind and other disturbing elements.

What type of lawn care works best for you depends on the time and money you decide to put into your lawn. If your lawn is your hobby, you can spend thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours of time on it.

The best lawn care tip you can get is to start with a solid plan.
1. Do you need to plant grass? Do some research on the best seed for your area, where to buy it cheap, and when it's available. Depending on where you live, you'll plant either cool season or warm season grass.
Cool season grass, planted in northern areas, is usually best planted in early fall, but if you missed planting then, plant it in the spring when soil temperatures reach 50 F.
Warm season grass needs soil temps of 70F to thrive and is the choice for southern plantings. Don't make the mistake of thinking you can plant warm season grass in the upper Midwest. Warm season grasses are bred to thrive in southern climates and are not winter hardy in the north.
2. Of course, you'll keep new grass plantings moist, but once grass reaches a height of three inches, water it deeply once a week.
A healthy lawn needs about an inch of water a week. When watering, remember to consider recent rainfalls. Shallow watering techniques keep grass from sinking the deep roots that your lawn needs to compete with deep-rooted weeds.
3. Do you already have a lawn? Aerate it in the spring while it's still moist and before the spring rains are done.
Aerating your lawn in the springtime gives microbes and other small life forms a breath of fresh air after winter. Aeration also makes new paths for drainage and keeps your lawn from becoming saturated.
4. A lot is written about lawn fertilizer and the big question is why? Grass is the most efficient user of nitrogen on earth!
Feed your soil with nutrient rich compost and let your lawn get its nutrients the natural way. The more chemicals you use, the more you disturb the natural biological processes that convert organic matter into nutrients and the microbes and other small organisms that take natural care of your lawn.
5. Mow your grass high. A 2 ½ to 3-inch high cut makes your lawn look fuller, feel softer, and helps keep it healthy. Taller grass shades pesky weed seeds and keeps them from getting established. In addition, a taller lawn is better able to absorb sunshine and better able to retain moisture, the two main contributors to a healthy lawn.

How To Prevent Damping Off

Damping off is the single term used to describe
underground, soil line, or crown rots of seedlings due to
unknown causes. The term actually covers several soil borne
diseases of plants and seed borne fungi. The fungi which
cause root rot are species of Phyium, Phytophthora,
Rhizoctonia and Fusarium.
There are two types of damping off: pre-emergence and post-
emergence. In pre-emergence damping-off, seeds may rot and
seedlings may decay before they emerge. In post-emergence
damping off the seedlings emerge then may pale, curl, wilt,
and collapse from a rot at the soil line and below. The
base of the stem is generally water-soaked at first then
turns gray to brown or black then rots.
Vegetable seedlings often do not grow well under humid
conditions, particularly if the soil is cold and wet.
Damping off fungi flourish in moist, unhygienic conditions.
The disease often starts at one end of a seed tray, and
quickly spreads to the other end. A fluffy fungal growth
may also appear on the soil surface as well as on the dead
seedlings.
When preparing to plant be sure that flats, tools, plant
containers, and benches are clean. Damping off pathogens
can live in these containers. The easiest way to disinfect
them is to dip them in a bleach solution for 10 seconds.
Use 1 part bleach to 4 parts water. Or use 70 percent
rubbing alcohol.
Plant in a light, well drained fertile seedbed. Preferably
use sterile soils that have been pasteurized with heat
before planting. Maintain a soil pH at the low end of the
average scale. A soil of 6.4 pH is less susceptible to root
rot than a pH of 7.5. As plants are watered the pH
gradually increases. Test often and continue to maintain a
lower pH while the plants are still germinating. If
necessary use one tablespoon of vinegar to 1 gallon of water
to lower a rising pH level.
Plant seeds no deeper than 4 times their own thickness.
Keep the seedbed soil on the dry side after planting and
allow plenty of bright light but not direct sunlight.
Use plant containers with drainage holes, water from the
bottom only, and avoid excess watering. Do not allow pots
to stand in water as excess water cannot drain and the roots
will be starved for oxygen which will stop all growth of
seedlings. Never water late in the day.
Avoid overcrowding and overfeeding of plants. Do not
overfertilize, especially with nitrogen.

Think about where to place plants that require a lot of
sunlight. The best place for such plants is away from

prefer the sunshine streaming through your windows, then you
are best not to have bulky trees or bushes near the house,
where they will block the sunlight.

vegetables, the best place for them is near the house. When
they are near the house, it is more likely that you will be

think about the location of vegetables as far as their needs
for sunlight are concerned. This is especially true if yours
is mainly a vegetable garden.
Last, but not least, take into account your personal
preferences, when designing a garden. If there are
particular extras you would like to have, for instance
winding pathways or gazebos, include them in the initial
design of the garden. Your outdoor garden is constrained
only by the limits of your creativity and the growing season

How to Make Your Own Rooting Hormone

When starting a new plant from a leaf or stem cutting, the
cutting will be more likely to form roots and create a new
plant if a rooting hormone is used.
While commercial rooting hormone can be used there are
organic homemade versions that work as well.
To make rooting hormone soak the yellow-tipped shoots of a
weeping willow tree in water. A tea made from the bark of a
willow tree is also effective. When using the shoots or
bark soak them for 24 hours prior to using.
Some people have found that using honey makes an effective
rooting hormone as well.
Leaf cuttings: Any plant with leaves such as African
Violet, Geranium etc. can be propagated with leaf cuttings.
Using a sharp knife cut off a healthy leaf at the point
where it joins the stem. Insert the cut part, called a
petiole, into the rooting hormone. Place the end into a
small container of light potting soil in which you have made
a small hole with a pencil. Making a hole prior to planting
assures that the rooting hormone will not be brushed off the
cutting when you plant it. Perlite, Vermiculite, and/or
water-soaked Sphagnum moss can be added to potting soil to
make the soil light. Make sure the leaf is leaning slightly
so that the new plants will have plenty of light and not be
shaded by the leaf.
Stem cuttings: These are treated just like leaf cuttings
except you cut off a stem with several leaves instead of
just one leaf. Remove the bottom leaves, leaving a few at
the top. Proceed as with the leaf cutting.
In both instances cover the pot with a plastic bag or
inverted glass jar. This will keep moisture from
evaporating and keep the cutting from wilting. Keep in a
warm location with diffused light but out of direct
sunlight. When there is indications of growth after about 3
to 6 weeks, transplant the new emerging plant into a new pot
of potting soil. Continue to keep a humid environment for
about 2 more weeks until active growth begins.

How To Make Money With Garage Sales

Drive through almost any neighborhood in any city or town on
a weekend, and you're sure to see garage sales scattered
throughout.
These homeowners are spending their weekend time off making
money. The average profit is $600 for a one-weekend garage
sale.
It's time to get your share of the pie. Organization is the
key.
Step one: Check with the local officials to see what the
local laws and regulations are on operating garage sales in
your area.
Step two: Spend a few weekends going to garage sales in
your area. See what is selling, what people are buying, how
the items are priced, how the sellers advertise. Observe
how the sellers display their items. Take notes.
Step three: Clean house and take stock of what you have and
what it's time to get rid of. Be sure to pick out at least
one interesting and unusual item to call
attention to your sale; some large ticket item you can set
up in front of your home during your sale.
If you find older items such as dishes, a painting, an old
flower urn etc. that you feel it's time to dispose of have
it appraised. You don't want to sell something for 50 cents
only to find out later it was an antique valued at $500.00.
You can be sure there are garage sale shoppers who are on
the lookout for just this kind of treasure.
Step four: Pick a date for your sale. The best time to
have a garage sale is twice a year in May or September.
People will be out shopping for summer items in May and
winter items in September.
Never pick a holiday weekend such as Mother's Day or Labor
Day. Holiday festivities will get the attention of most
people.
The best days for your garage sale are Thursday, Friday, and
Saturday.
Step five: Advertise, advertise and advertise some more.
Place ads in the local newspaper, shopper guides, on
bulletin boards and even online. Place signs all over the
neighborhood with brightly colored letters, attached
balloons, etc.
Step six: Organize your sale. Put price stickers on your
items. Have a wide variety of clothing and jewelry and
arrange them in a rainbow of colors. Make sure jewelry and
appliances sparkle! Hang clothing on racks arranged in
sizes. Imagine that you are opening a retail store and copy
what the stores do.
If you have items that are hard to price and you think they
will not sell, put them in a penny box. And be sure to mark
the box "Penny Box" or "All items just 1 cent each".
Step seven: Timing. Consider starting at 7:00 a.m. instead
of 8:00 or 9:00. And close no later than 6:00 p.m. And
positively NEVER shut down for the noon hour! There are
people who work on weekends and will stop on their way to or
from work and shop during their lunch breaks.
As most customers will have come and gone by 1:00, noon hour
being the most active, you can start lowering prices after
1:00 p.m. On items you think will not sell at all, put them
in a box marked "Free".
And lastly, what doesn't sell take to the local Good Will or
other organization of your choice.

How to make candles

Making homemade candles can be a fun hobby, whether making them as gifts or for yourself to enjoy. Candle making usually requires some experimentation, but when you discover how to make those perfect candles, it’s well worth the effort.
There are a few basic supplies needed for making most candles:
wax
wicks
mold or containers
wax melter
candle making thermometer
fragrances
dyes
putty for molds
First decide on a wax you would like to start with, there are three different kinds to choose from: paraffin wax, soy wax, and beeswax. Paraffin wax is most commonly used in candles, this wax is found at most candle making stores. Soy wax is all natural, made from soybeans, and cleans up easily with soap and water. Beeswax is all natural too, and making beeswax candles is often easiest because you simply wrap a sheet of beeswax tightly around a wick then seal it with your thumb, which means no melting is required.
To begin, spread newspapers around the candle making area. First you melt your paraffin or soy wax and it must be double-boiled. Usually you place a large pot that is about half-filled with water on a burner over low-medium heat, place a melter in the water, then gradually place wax pieces into the melter. When the wax has melted, you can add coloring or fragrance as desired.
To make molded candles, cut the wick two inches taller than you want the candle to be, then thread it through the hole at the bottom of the mold, then plug the outside of the hole with putty. Place a pencil or similar item over the top of the mold and tie the top of the wick to it, centering the wick. If the mold is cardboard, plastic, or glass, heat the wax to 130 degrees Fahrenheit. If the mold is metal, then heat the wax to 190 degrees. You can use a candle or candy thermometer to measure this. When the right temperature is reached, lift the melter by the handle and slowly pour the wax into the mold. Let cool for twelve hours then refrigerate for twelve more hours, then your candle is ready to be removed.
To make votives and other small container candles, you can use pre-tabbed wicks by simply placing them in the center of the votive candle molds or containers, then pour the wax mixture over and let stand for twelve hours, refrigerating the votives.
This should give you a good start in this enjoyable hobby.
